Baseball Field Cake

This guide will give you step-by-step instructions on how to place the edible image on the side of the cake and how to decorate the top to look like a baseball field.

If you are having a Playoff or World Series party, here is a great and easy idea for a baseball cake. I made this cake for a Mets fan and used an edible image on the sides.

Please note that if you are interested in using an edible image as I have here, I am unable to sell pictures of any copyrighted material. This means that I cannot sell images of team logos. If you are still interested, I can create a pinstripe with or without the team name.

To make this cake you will need...

2 Square cakes the size of your choice
1 Square cake board approximately 2-4 inches larger than the cake
White and Green buttercream icing (you will also need a small amount of icing in the team's color)
Tip #233 a.k.a. the grass tip
Tip # 2, 3 and 5
2 edible transfer images
Crushed animal crackers
Baseball player toppers

Directions

Step 1

Level, tort and fill your cakes. Place them in the center of your cake board and ice the sides with white buttercream icing. Once covered, place your edible image on the side of the cake.

***Decorator's tip*** By using white on the sides, you will not change the color of your image once the paper melts into your icing. If you have ordered this image from us, you will need to trim the picture to fit the size of your cake. Also spray the side of the cake lightly so the paper will melt into the icing, leaving a seamless transition. All other instructions will be included in your shipment.

Step 2

With green icing, ice a small area on top of the cake so the animal cracker crumbs have something to stick to. Then, using tip # 3, pipe a barrier for the crushed animal crackers around the base lines as well as a hill in the middle for a pitcher's mound. Then crush the animal crackers and place them on the pitchers mound and in your marked off area.

***Decorator's Tip***
It is important to decorate in this order so that any loose crumbs won't ruin your cake.

Step 3

Using tip # 233, pipe the grass on top of the cake. Then using tip #5, pipe a boarder in your team's colors ; I have used orange. Then use that same color and tip #2 or 3 to pipe your message on top. Finally, place the baseball players on top.

Wilton Haunted House Cake

Here is one more Halloween cake. I got this haunted house idea from an old Wilton Yearbook. I could not find the directions on their website for you but basically it is a 3 tier cake where the tiers are lined up towards the back. To get the stone look I covered the cakes in gray fondant and using a gumpaste tool, I indented the fondant to look like stone. To give the stone a more realistic look, I brushed black coloring into the cracks. Also, the cake board was covered in brown fondant. After the board was covered, I used a gumpaste tool to make each board and add a woodgrain effect. Finally, I painted it with brown coloring to give it the glossy finish.

***Decorator's Tip*** After you paint a small section of the wood floor, run your finger through the paint. This will push the color into the cracks and give it a more realistic look. It is a messy technique but definitely worth it.

The steps were made with red fondant. The extra steps were made with a rectangular piece of fondant before it was covered in red. The candles were made of gumpaste, Tic-Tacs, and royal icing. Finally, the windows were made from Wilton Color Flow while the people where made with cookies and royal icing. If you would like more help with this cake don't hesitate to e-mail (kseals@pieceofcakedecorating.com) your questions or ask in our forums.

This cake is a lot of work but definitely worth the wow factor. Here is the cake I am making this year. Much simpler but very creepy. You can find instructions to this cake on Wilton's website.

In this guide you will be given resources for stacking cakes and making a gumpaste ribbon as well as learn how to place real ribbon around the sides.  You can make decorating a wedding cake even easier by purchasing all gumpaste decorations needed from my handmade shop.

In honor of my friend Donna's 1 year wedding anniversary, I would like to share one of my wedding cakes with you. I did not make Donna's cake, however, I did make this cake for another friend this past June. It was a blast to make and I was honored to play a part in her special day.

To make this cake you will need...

2 14 inch round, 2 inch high cakes
2 10 inch round, 2 inch high cakes
2 6 inch round, 2 inch high cakes
Filling of your choice
About 5 batches of buttercream icing
5-6 lbs of ivory fondant
40 gumpaste roses of various sizes and colors
20 gumpaste leaves
1 ivory gumpaste bow
Ivory ribbon
Piping gel
6, 10, 14 inch round cake dividers
Wooden dowels
18 inch round wooden cake board
Wilton fanci foil

Here are a few items that can save you time and make decorating this cake even easier...

Directions

Step 1

A few weeks in advance make your gumpaste roses, leaves, and bow. For an added pop, add luster or pearl dust to your decorations. Click here for a tutorial on how to make a gumpaste bow.

Also cover your cake board with Wilton Fanci Foil.

***Decorator's Tip*** It is important to use a wooden cake board because your cake will be very heavy and you need to make sure it will be supported.

Step 2

Level, tort and fill all cakes. Each cake should be placed on it's own cake divider and covered in fondant separately. Ice each cake with buttercream icing and then cover with fondant. Click here for tips on how to cover a cake with fondant.

Step 3

Place wooden dowels around the center of the bottom two layers for support. The larger the layer, the more dowels you will need. Be sure to leave the center open because once all the cakes are stacked you will need to drive a sharpened dowel down the center of all 3 layers. Click here for more tips on how to stack cakes.

Step 4

Using a brush and some piping gel, add the ivory ribbon to the cake.

Step 5

Make 2 ribbons out of fondant and drape them down the front of the cake as pictured. As you can see from my picture, one fondant ribbon is longer than the other. Use piping gel or buttercream icing to hold them in place. Next, place the gumpaste bow on top of the cake.

***Decorator's Tip*** Leave the bow on top of the cake to help you with the placement of the roses in the next step. However, when transporting the cake, it would be a good idea to leave the bow off. Once the cake is at the reception, attach the gumpaste bow with a little bit of buttercream icing.

Step 6

Place the roses on the cake. There is no right or wrong way to do this, just trust your instincts. Once all of the roses are on, add the leaves to fill in the spaces.

That's it! Decorating a wedding cake can feel overwhelming at first but if you just take one tier at a time, it is a lot easier than you think.

Bassinet Cake

In this guide I will discuss how to stack and support this cake as well as give you step-by-step directions for decorating.

This is a great baby shower cake and can be altered to suit a boy, girl, or unknown gender baby. The hardest part of this whole cake, not counting the gumpaste decorations, is constructing a support system so the head of the cake does not fall over. If gumpaste is not your thing, you can purchase these handmade items here.

To make this cake you will need...

3 11x9 inch cakes
1 1/2 10 inch round cakes
1 10 inch round cake divider
5-6 wooden dowels
1 11 x 9 inch cake divider
1 14 x 12 inch cake board
Wilton Tips # 3, 21, 127
White and pink buttercream icing
Gumpaste pillow and flowers
2 Small rattle favors

Directions:

Step 1

Level all cakes. Stack and fill the first two rectangle cakes on the cake board. Evenly place 4 small dowels in these cakes for support. Put the 3rd rectangle cake on your cardboard divider and place it on top.

***Decorator's tip*** You may need to trim the cake divider.

Step 2

Cut the round cakes and cake dividers in half. Stack and fill the cake halves between the two 1/2 circle cake dividers. Place these cakes on the cake as seen in the pictures below. Then take 4 sharpened dowels cut to size and place them on either side of the half circles accordingly.
Dowel Placement
***Decorator's Tip*** You will need a hammer to drive the dowels through the rectangular cake board.

Step 3

Just as in the picture below, ice the cake with white buttercream icing. You do not need to be as need or use as much icing on the bottom two layers because you will be adding a ruffle.

Iced Cake

Step 4

Using tip # 127 and white buttercream icing, add a ruffle on the bottom 2 layers and around the edges of the 1/2 circles.

Step 5

Using tip # 21 and pink buttercream icing, add a boarder on the flat edge of the ruffles. With tip # 3 and white buttercream icing, add small dots on the shade of the bassinet.

Step 6

Place gumpaste decorations and rattles on the cake. Using tip # 3 and white buttercream icing, write your message on the pillow.

Guest Post by Herman Barry

My mom and my wife haven’t really gotten along that well since my wife and I started dating. I am not really sure what they find to disagree on but I feel the tension in the area every time they are around each other. My dad say they continue to dislike each other because they are so much alike and I tend to agree with that. It’s so funny that opposites attract and similar personalities tend to clash but that’s the way it seems to happen. Maybe I can send my wife and my mom out on a trip in the next several months. Perhaps, they need some time to figure out how similar they really are. I know if I just spring the news on them both and tell them that the tickets are non-refundable they will have to go because neither my mom nor wife likes to waste things. Yesterday, when I was looking up trips online I stumbled across Direct TV and I felt like not only would my mom and wife start getting along, this would also be a time for my father and I to start bonding once again.
