This week I would like to change things up a bit and feature a fellow Mommy Cake Decorator.  The cakes you will see below were made by Lisa from Mom Blog.  She blogs about her life as a stay-at-home mom of three.  Just like me, she discovered her passion for cake decorating after taking the Wilton Decorating Courses.  These are just a few of  her cakes so make sure you stop by her blog and see what else she has created.

This monkey cake is my favorite of her cakes by far.  How cute is that!

I love the sandals on this cake.

I have been wanting to make a castle cake since Wilton came out with this kit.  I love Lisa's creative take on it.

I chose this cake because of how realistic it looks!

Thank you Lisa for sharing your cakes with us!  I look forward to seeing what you will create next.

Contact me if you would like to share your cake creations with Piece of Cake Decorating.  Cake decorators of all levels are welcome!

CD Collection Cake

I made this cake for a bridal shower. The couple met in a music store so I created CD covers to tell the story of their relationship. If you follow the CDs around you can see where they met, how he proposed, and their wedding song. There are also filler CDs which include a picture of interlocked hands to represent their marriage, one of the bride's favorite songs, The Beatles' song title "All You Need is Love," and a sweet message.

To make this cake you will need...

1/2 sheet cake
large cake board
white buttercream icing
white gumpaste
black fondant or gumpaste
airbrush kit (optional)
projector (optional)
pre made black icing
tips #2 #3 #5 #68 #35

Other useful items:

Directions:

Step 1

A few days in advance, make your CD cases/covers. First you must roll out white gumpaste and cut out seven 9 1/2'' x 9'' rectangles. Let the gumpaste dry for 1-2 days and flip half way through to speed the drying process. Once the gumpaste is dry, airbrush them your desired colors.

***Important note*** If you are not using an airbrush, make sure to color your gumpaste before you roll and cut it.

There are a few ways to get the pictures onto the gumpaste.

  1. If you have the skills, you can freehand the pictures.
  2. Apply an edible image to the gumpaste. Click here to purchase an image.
  3. Use a projector to paint or pipe your image onto the gumpaste.

For this cake I used option number 3. It was a lot of work but the images really popped off the cake.

Step 2

To make all of the CDs I used the same process.

1. Place the original picture in the projector.

Original Image

2. The image is projected onto the gumpaste. Then, using tips #2 or #3 and the pre made black icing, pipe the outline of the image onto the gumpaste.

projected imageFinal Product

3. If needed, use the edible airbrush ink to paint your pictures. For this CD I painted the grooms hat, tie and shoes with black ink. To make the bride's dress pop, I mixed clear vanilla extract with pearl dust and painted her dress, veil, and shoes. To add a personal touch, I gave the bride blond hair.

***Notes on the CDs*** I did a Google images search to find the images. All of the CD piping was done using a projector. This includes the handwriting. Below is a list of the CDs I made and any important tips for decorating them.
  • Music Store CD - I airbrushed it green and piped the logo onto the CD using black icing and tip #3. Musical notes were also added using black icing and tip #3.
  • Filler CD #1 - I airbrushed it a combo of red and pink and piped the words 'All You Need is Love' using tip #3 and black icing.
  • Proposal CD - I airbrushed the gumpaste blue and piped the outline of a boat and the word 'Yes!' using black icing and tip #2. The boat was then painted using red, black, and pearl edible ink. To make the water stand out on a blue background, I painted blue piping gel on the bottom half of the CD.
  • Message CD- I airbrushed the gumpaste pink and piped the following message using black icing and tip #3: 'Siobhan & Joe, May you always make beautiful music together."
  • Filler CD #2- I airbrushed the gumpaste yellow and piped on the original Banana Pancakes CD cover using black icing and tips #2 and #1.
  • Wedding Song CD- See above.
  • Marriage CD- The gumpaste was left white and the image was piped using black icing and tip #2. I then painted the picture using flesh and red colored edible ink.
Once all of the CDs are dry you can add the black strip to the left side of each CD. Roll out black fondant or gumpaste and cut to size. Attach the strip with piping gel. To give it a rigid look, I made small indents into the black strip using a gumpaste tool. The end of a paintbrush or a fork will also work.

Step 3

Level, tort and fill your 1/2 sheet cake. Place the cake on your cake board and ice with white buttercream icing. The sides of the cake should be lightly iced. Next, pipe vertical lines on the sides with tip #68 and a shell boarder around the top with tip #35.

Iced Cake

Step 4

Place your CDs on top of the cake. Use a mound of buttercream icing underneath the CDs you want to appear propped up.

***Decorator's Tip*** You may want to practice arranging your gumpaste CDs before you put them on the cake to prevent them from becoming ruined.

For an added touch, add gumpaste or royal icing flowers around the cake.

Gumpaste Hydrangea

I came across this great 2 part gumpaste hydrangea tutorial at the Petalsweet Cakes Blog. Part 1 of the tutorial gives detailed instructions and pictures to making the beautiful flowers seen above. Part 2 then discusses how to color and assemble the bouquet.

*Update: Jacqueline has recently posted a Part 3 to her tutorial.  Here she discusses how to make the gumpaste leaves.

I know these flowers look intimidating but Jacqueline does such a great job with this tutorial that if you have just a little bit of gumpaste experience, you will be able to make these flowers.

My first Feature Friday will be putting the spotlight on an amazing custom cake boutique serving the greater Seattle area. A Tier Above has tons of cake flavors and fillings at a reasonable price. If you stop by their website, www.atierabove.com, you will find a gallery of party and wedding cakes. I spent a lot of time trying to decide which pictures to share with you. It was a tough decision because I truly loved them all.

This first group of pictures comes from their Party Cakes Album. As a wine lover, this first cake quickly caught my eye. I love how the wine is being spilled and the label is stained.

Wine Bottle Cake

In this next cake, I envy the butterflies they have made. I would love to learn how to do this some day!

Butterfly Tier Cake

The sugar bubbles and fuzzy slippers in this last party cake are a perfect touch.

Bubble Bath Cake

These next few cakes I will be sharing with you come from their Wedding Cake Album. There are tons more to see but these are just a few of my favorites. The first group is more of a traditional look. The flowers are absolutely amazing!

Traditional Wedding CakeTraditional Wedding Cake

Non-traditional cakes are some of my favorite to make. You really get a chance to be creative and showcase the couples personality. (I just realized that both cakes are related to coffee...oops!)

Floral Bridal Shower Cake

This cake was made for a bridal shower with a tropical theme. If you know how to make the flowers, it is very easy to put together.  Don't know how to  make gumpaste flowers?  No problem.  You can now purchase them from my handmade shop.

To make this cake you will need...

1 sheet cake sized cake board
1 sheet cake
white and green buttercream icing
pink, green, orchid, yellow and purple gumpaste
pink piping gel
tips #2, #3, #85 and #35

Directions:

Step 1

A few days in advance, make the gumpaste flowers. Except for the fantasy flowers, everything you need to know and make the flowers, including the cutters, can be found in the Wilton Floral Collection Flower Making Kit below. Click this link for instructions on how to make the fantasy flower.

You will need to make 2 large fantasy flowers, 6 orchids, 6 lilies, 8 small pink daisies, 4 white daisies, 6 purple cherry blossoms, 6 yellow cherry blossoms, 6-8 large leaves, and 8-10 small leaves.

***Decorator's Tip*** It is always a good idea to make extra gumpaste items.

Step 2

Level, tort and fill your cake on the cake board. You are then ready to ice the cake. With this cake, the top was iced smooth with white buttercream icing. The sides were vertically piped using tip #85 and white buttercream icing, just like in the picture below.

Piped Side Example

Then, using tip #35 and white buttercream icing, pipe the boarder around the top edge of the cake. A shell boarder would work great.

Step 3

You are now ready to place your flowers on the cake. To get height on the group of flowers, pipe a large mound of white buttercream icing where you want your flowers to go. Once you are happy with the placement of your flowers, fill in the gaps with your large leaves. If needed, you can use a few of your small leaves as well.

Step 4

Using green buttercream icing and tip #3, pipe a vine as I have in the pictured cake. You should have 4 wavy vines when you are complete. Where it looks natural, I have piped small extensions of the vine.

Step 5

Place your smaller flowers along the vine and add a leaf here and there.

Step 6

Mix pink icing coloring in some piping gel and place the gel in a piping bag with tip #2. Pipe your message.

***Decorator's Tip*** Piping gel is very runny, especially after you mix color into it. To firm it up, place it in the freezer for a few minutes.

This is one of my favorite fillings. I was intimidated the first time I made it but it is actually very easy. It is delicious in both vanilla and chocolate cake!

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 (15 ounce) container ricotta cheese
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon sweet Marsala wine (optional)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips

  • Directions:

    1. Place sugar and cornstarch in saucepan and stir in the milk. Cook over low heat, whisking constantly, until mixture thickens and is bubbly. About 5 minutes.
    2. Remove pan from heat and let mixture cool slightly. Meanwhile, place the ricotta cheese in large bowl and blend with mixer on low speed until creamy. About 1 minute.
    3. Fold ricotta into cooled milk and sugar mixture, orange zest, Marsala wine, if desired, and vanilla. Blend with mixer on low speed until well combined for about 1 minute.
    4. Fold in chocolate chips. Set bowl in refrigerator, covered, while you bake the cake.

    Cowboy Cake

In this guide you will learn how to make edible sand/pebbles and add a buttercream transfer image to a cake.

To make this cake you will need...

    1/2 sheet cake (2 layers)
    1 foil covered cake board
frozen buttercream icing (brown, tan and red)
1 tube of black pre made icing.
basic buttercream icing (blue, red, green and brown)
    graham cracker 'logs' or 'sticks'
    cowboy image
tips # 1, 2, 3, and 5 (you will need at least 2 of each tip- except tip #1)

    Directions:

    Step 1

At least 1 day in advance, make your transfer image. Use our google search bar at the top to help you find a picture. For best results, search 'cowboy coloring pages' under Google Images.

Once you have your picture, use your frozen buttercream icing recipe, tips #1, 2 and 3 and follow our Frozen Buttercream Transfer Tutorial.

    Step 2

Level, tort and fill your 1/2 sheet cake. Then, ice your cake with blue buttercream icing.

***Decorator's Tip*** When icing your cake, keep in mind that the lower half will be covered with 'sand.' By leaving mounds of icing, you will give the appearance of hills after the next step is completed.

    Step 3

Line the sides of the cake with your graham cracker logs or sticks. Both will work so use what you can find. Crush the remaining graham crackers in a plastic Ziploc bag. Sprinkle the graham crackers along the bottom half of the cake to look like sand and pebbles.

    Step 4

Place your frozen buttercream transfer on the cake. There are really no tricks needed here. Just make sure you peel your wax paper off slowly and place the image on before it thaws.

    Step 5

Using tip #5 and green buttercream icing, pipe the large cactus on the cake. To make the cactus pop, pipe another layer of green icing on top using tip #3.

***Decorator's Tip*** It is very difficult to pipe on top of graham crackers but it is important to put them on first so they do not fall on top of the cacti as you sprinkle them. So, before you pipe the cacti, brush away the graham crackers with a decorator's brush. Once you have piped your cactus, push the crackers back with the brush. Have a toothpick handy just in case your icing lifts away from the cake as you are piping it.

Next, pipe the small cactus on the cake using the same concepts as above and tips # 3 then 2.

    Step 6 (optional)

Using red buttercream icing and tip #5, pipe 'Happy Birthday' in the sky and your child's name in the sand. Next, pipe a lasso around 'Happy Birthday' using tip # 3 or 5 (depending on the size of your image) and brown buttercream icing. You can also pipe extra rope in the 'dirt.'
